mid July
Pumpkins..finally outlived their fruit producing capacity..ie, they continued to flower, but the fruit just rotted on the vine, and fertilising them wasn’t changing that At All. So, we reclaimed the portion of the back yard that was still pumpkin encumbered.
Looks awfully bare..sigh. But then again, thats what it looked like when we moved in hey. We have a magnificent stand of tomatoes, of the cherry variety, they grew like the powers, but not a lot of flowers, let alone fruit. Then..oh look, lots of flowers..tiny they are…then, almost an afterthought, a few cherry tomatoes trying to hide. Apparantly the first few distappeared..things have been doing that here and there. At the tanderra address, possums were a bit more..evident when ate anything, the blighters left a lot of damage hey. Here, buggerall damage, besides the missing stuff that is. Zucchinis have also grown like all getout, but at least they have the good manners to actually flower and make little zuchinis without intervention . One of those got chomped, it was like a test nibble, see what it was like. Well, the rest of it didnt get eaten, so Id say that it wasnt palatable enough. Small wonder, actually, when bread and strawberry jam is laid out, over the fence so the bigger possums can enjoy as well..every night sees some sort of treat. Apples, nicely cut up of course, chunks of stale bread, and the occasional bread and jam treat. Whats the world coming to, I hear you ask?
My goodness me!
I forgot the different bits of fruit on the -cut price cos we’re starting to get old- table at the local fruit and vegy shop. Melons. different types. Pears. bananas, some good enough for the table. Apples, sundry varieties. The remnants from the pink-and-grey cage..old seed that is, gets piled up out there as well. So we get different critters enjoying that particular feast.
Occasionally, they All Dip Out, as in go without. Its raining, or freezing, or or or..theres heaps of different reasons and rationales why the..poor..aforementioned crtitters of the nocturnal variety, mostly on four legs, but occasionally on two, dont get federated at night. Thats the time that I would have thought that the veggie garden would have copped a hiding, seeing as how we actually have to look for tucker, rather than have it served up for us on..well, almost..a plate. doesnt seem to happen, though, or, if it does, its in small doses.
We got one possum that sidles past the side door on the way to his..or her..may I say richly deserved..tucker over the back fence at night..I reckon it lives across the road, and manages to squeeeze through the bars on the front gate to get there. Much more bread and jam, though, might see it consigned to eternal starvatude, on account of only the smallest of the small can get through those bars… Ever heard a possum swear? They make quite a racket eh.
Great story!
