Diddums dog
Diddums dog was Bills’ dog. Great for in the yard or close quarters. Had the habit of running around the front of the mob of sheep to see where I was..one step forwards, one step back. Used to go where I told him though..a bonus. Dad giving me a hand..well, it never really worked all that well. Everything had to be done his way..leo after all..what would take me on my own plus diddums dog would take twice as long if Dad gave a hand. So on these occasions, Dads’ vegy garden flourished.. Trouble is, when racing a mixed up mob of sheep off, you really need the help of another person..I stand by the swing gate..goes from side to side at the end of a one sheeps width sized funnel or race..shunting el sheepies etc off ( that are coming toward me ) to one side or the other. thereby unmixing said mixed up mob. diddums could yaffle behind them..and they’d run through the race, playing follow the leader..then one would baulk, and stop. You’d have to get them started again. enter the sheepdog hero of the hour..Diddums dog. Run from my side straight into the race..sheep go everywhere..jump over him and each other..end result..the one that jumped over him was able to run through, thereby starting the follow the leader happening again. No matter how annoyed I got at the sheep that baulked..it was always a treat to send diddums through, and see the end result..ab-so-lute chaos..and one sheepie sees his mates ahead, and it all starts again. The first couple through after a Diddums insertion always had a bit of speed to them..you had to be a bit sharpish with the swinggate..
Diddums sounds like quite a character & a great mate. What a hoot. Lovely story Bill
