Crows part 2
Crows in suburbia.
(Another Drongo picture)
Having been born and bred on a sheepieBaa type farm, you do get used to how crows react. Guns were a no-no, anything dead needed to be investigated on the offchance that the tassie devils hadnt visited yet, and there was a juicy morsel to be had..as long as you got there before the rest of ’em found out.
A single crow singing away..means that the rest of them arent bothered by what the single crow has found. several, or a heap of them making a racket, but not down on the ground, usually meant something dying, or weakened, but still able to snap at thems that got too close. No racket, but a heap of them, was something dead, with more than enough to go around. In Beacon the WA one, I once went across to visit Bazza, and I had a bucket in my hand..I walked through a patch of scrub that was next to the northern town dam. And there was a pair of crows that started to sing out, hopping along, keeping tabs on me. I dodged behind a tree, and all hell broke loose until they figured out where I had gotten to. Fun..I had gone across this patch of scrub, and hed not attracted the attention of these two before..so the difference was..the bucket. They just plain didnt like the idea of me with a bucket…Perhaps they had eggs close by or something.
So, the other morning..a single crow was singing out..the blighter started at 4am…a bit on the early side eh. Wasn’t joined by any more of them, so probably not anything dead. Maybe still alive, or perhaps was dead, but close enough to..humans or a ute to give it pause. At the Tanderra st address, we had a magpie singing out..only the one, and the big-eye birds joined in, but got bored after a minute or so. The Maggie was made of sterner stuff, and upon investigation, I saw a particular mottling in the tree next to it..6 to 8 foot of carpet snake.
I happen to rather like them, ever since they never seemed to get upset or stroppy at me bundling them into a container, prepatory to moving them Elsewhere..
So, could have been a snake..but there was no sign of it later on. might have got tired of the racket hey. None of us went to investigate until..the frost had gone off the ground…
