Possums
Unfortunately, I have said that brushies are an acquired taste…they
love rose shoots u c..and iffen these..fruit loving critters eat all
the rose shoots, theres not going to be a lot of Mums’ favouritest
flowers in the whole wide world…happening.
so. House in Tassie.built on the side of a hill..an upstairs, a
floor level with the top of the hill, and a downstairs, pretty level
with the top of the river bank..in the early years, some pretty decent
floods happened, so we have a levee bank along the front.
Top floor peaked in the middle roof..then a wall, then a gentle
curved roof, then another drop to the ground a la top of the hill.
Dad wanted/needed to get up to the top..peaked roof, so he installed a
ladder..from the curved roof to the ..bottom of the peaked roof.
Unfortunately, what humans can climb up, we find that..fruit loving
critters can as well…
Dad used to get out the back..fruit loving critters sitting on top of
the peaked roof..you’d hear a Bang..then a rattle as shotgun pellets
hit the roof..and a thump. Then a slide..then nothing..then another
thump..and another slide..then another nothing, then another thump.
And a ..got him, or..got the blighter! Actually, this lot were pretty
playful..when they got a belly full of fruit and rose shoots, well,
they did eat other stuff..they’d run along the ..peaked roof, and miss
their footing..maybe! you’d here a ..oh bugger..possum language.. and
a slide..then a nothing as they fell off the ..peaked roof. Then a
thump as they hit the curved roof, then another slide as they went
down the curved roof..than a nothing as they fell off that, and a
thump as they hit the ground…then a gurgle or two..then a scurry and
a scamper, when they found the vine going up the pagola, more scampers
going up the curved roof, up Dads’ ladder, and up the ..peaked roof
to the top again. Here and there, you’d understand. But..on
occasion, this went on all night..no wonder Mum sent Dad out with the
shotgun..Charlie, do something about that possum! and their bedroom was inside, but just inside from the top of the curved roof. so, the thump of el possum hitting the curved roof..didn’t happen straight overhead..just to one side of overhead..and it was a tin roof as well..made a bit of a racket..
Ooohhh that was pure gold Bill. Beautifully written and such fun!!!
Thanks!
