Square Dance #1
Here I was in Moonah..little hall, for our regular pwp meeting/social getogether…Thats parents without partners..no big deal all this time down the track!
And we were due for a treat..local troupe of square dancers were coming in to do a demo. So, record player, various records..biggish hole in the middle, not your usual 45 rpm ones. One side of the disc was straight music..the other was that same music, but with a square dance caller on it, singing away, and also in between, doing a square dance. Allemand your corner, dosey doe your own..etc. I had seen the occasional american square dance on tv, but had no idea they did it out here. Well, the long and the short of it was, I loved it. Joined up I did. Rocked up to my first night..here were two or three sets going flat out, caller singing away, everyone enjoying immensley. So, I asked the callers’ missus..how do I learn all the movements? Is there a night for it…She reckoned..not for ages..but you’ll be right..you’re into bush dance..similar movements..we’ll give you a hand. Well, I was into bush dance, used to be a Last Saturday Night of the Month Bush Dance in Hobart. That was sooo good. Dances from all over the place. Greek, Israeli..squaredance sort of..american, lots aussie ones. Russian troika..magnificent that was. So good, but it lost its shine. It was ok when..er..everyone was ..able to run around at a rate of knots..but this all changed. A slower lot turned up..they couldn’t get around like us lot could..spoilt it..for me anyway. I gave it a miss after that. Hey, everyone paid to get in, no stipulation as to agility or anything. So, square dance came along at the right time for me.
