Single girls. Obviously, the best way for them to go, was find a partner. All these choices abound..but the most popular option was..find yourself a guy who did square dance already. Next, find a guy, drag him along to learners class, hope like hell that he finished the course and still liked it..and hope that nobody else took him off your hands in the meantime! Now, more girls than guys, we were used to it. But..on occasion, more guys than girls! Boot was on the other foot then! So one or more guys had to dance as a girl. Now, you always had the wags, who’d do this deliberately..they’d have a wow of a time..get called petal, get air kisses..or worse! pinch on the bum, all totally gay, and everyone enjoyed it. Thinking backwards..nuh, I turn you, Bill, not the other way around! Other hand, petal..think light on your feet..twirl isn’t a twirl when you do it.. This arm goes here, not there,..and don’t get any funny ideas..
The guys routinely did a few movements together, and so did the girls. Left hand star, right hand star, swing through, and a few more..so touching another guy was no big deal.
The girls normally progress from partner to partner around all the guys, swing your corner..new partner then you see. And it was the callers job to mix everyone up, and get them back to the partner they started out with…he’d take note of a couple..and usually he..or she actually.. was able to get them back together..unless we figured out which couple he was watching, and swapped around some..our guy..u sods!..guys left hand star, turn it around, pick up your original partner…that was a good get-out!
