Square Dance #7
Here we were..well, not mysometimesgoodself, I was elsewhere..but we were having a square dance convention in Hobart I think it was..may have been Lonny. Anway..one of the callers noticed this lot..on the sidleines, not dancing. When he was able, he meandered over to ask why..and the answer he got gave him pause. We don’t recognise any of your calls! Ah..you have been to learners classes have you not?..Well, sort of! They explained..one of them had found a treasure trove of old records..and in amongst them was a series of learning the latest craze..square dancing. So this lot had got together 8 people..only trouble was, none of their husbands would entertain the idea of joining..they were into being fishing boat captains and suchlike..and there were eight of them after all. So, 4 of them learned the mens part ,and the other 4 the ladies part. Men dressed in black trousers, black shoes, fancy shirt..or a plain white one, with your choice of fancy gizmos scattered around. Girlz had a half a dozen or so petticoats, under a fancy frock, nice shoes and a top to match the frock. So, this lot had gotten pretty good, and they decided to go along to the next convention. so the caller asked them if they had brought along any records..yep yep yep. He put one on, and the whole dance floor came to a halt, as this tiny set of women performed a dinky di 1950 style square dance. Lots of ducking and diving, and graceful in and outs…Standing ovation went on for a bit..a few of the ones that could remember said..that was the most difficult dance they could have chosen, and they did it with style. A few of them come down to Hobart here and there to learn the modern style, and they went back and taught the rest of them… But most dances, camps and conventions from therein on, there was always a couple or two from those girls there…
