Square dance conventions were held every year..a state one in each state, and a national one…states took it in turns to hold. A national was always a huge affair..lots of accomodation was needed, People having friends stay over..whole hotel floors booked out. Tassie usually chose their nationals during the times that accomodation was cheap, and the boat trip across the Bass Strait was the cheapest…you guessed it, mid winter. Brrrrrr! Sods. Bl’ freezing..you could feel the bite in the wind as it came off the snow..in Hobart anyway.
