techspeak defrag
Being from the old school..um..as far as computers are concerned..
My Norton has this..optimise disk type thingo. I’d know this as defrag.
And, neither windows 10 nor Norton has this bit right..sigh.
Every time you turn around, the powers that be have changed anothewr setting. Another sigh
Latest one..automatic optimise, weekly
All well and good, ONLY..since when has 8 or 9% fragmentation been satisfactory?
My goodness me, whats the world coming to, I hear you ask.
My thoughts eggsactly.
A few years ago,..well, ok, more than a few years ago, we had a map on the screen, and you could see the bits changing around during a defrag. Fun it was. Of course, we’ve moved on since then. Noo more pretty maps or anything, its all digital claptrap. Sigh.
So, we click on window explorer, right click on one of the drive letters..c or d maybe, click on tools from the drop-down menu. Winny 10 automatically checks out the drive status..or so it says if you hit the check drive logo or whatever. Hit the optimise button, and there..in front of your very eyes, is
ta da
all the drives on your computer, with corresponding percerntage fragmentation status. Times were when 5% was the absolute pits. Anyway, 0% has a much nicer feel to it eh.Here, my screen still said 9%..but for two drives, one I’ve never heard of. Oh. And click on defrag of those two drives Doesnt Change Anything. Bugga!
Aha! One last trick to pull before getting a betterer defrager off the internet…at the price I want to pay, it’d probably be suss..unless it was from the windows store….but these stores can be fooled into ..all sorts of things.
So, we windows key, x
choose the administrator option..winny 10 I’m afraid..type in defrag enter
screen comes up..good old dos! with all the command line options. so..defrag C: /U /V being the one I’d choose, aaaand we can highlight it, and paste if you want.
So, away it goes, and yesthankyouverymuch, after..oh 5 mins maybe, the figures look ever so much betterer. Still got a funny drive there though..:)
Usually..well, ok, always you have to be careful fiddling around in any computers innards. So, not recommended for the faint hearted, or those with less than optimal computer skills. 🙂
